It’s Raining on Halloween

It’s Halloween and it’s raining here in the Northeast. My kids don’t melt in the rain, but the idea of trudging out with an umbrella or sitting in the car, while they run up to get candy we don’t need is just unbearable. I don’t mean to sound like a witch, I love Halloween and watching the excitement it brings for my kids, but as a tired mom, this sucks.

So I’ve devised a new plan for this year: the Halloween Toy Obstacle Course. I bought a bunch of Halloweeny themed toys and I’m setting up a trick or play obstacle course. At each station will be a different candy (only things I like) and if they complete a task they get the candy. At the end they can keep the candy or trade it in for a bigger prize.

I’ll pause here so you can applaud my creativity and efforts.

So what did I buy?

Station 1: STEM at Play Slime from hand2mind
Just because it’s Halloween doesn’t mean learning is off the table. This set has 14 experiments, 19 lab tools and a 36 page fact-filled colorful lab guide. The challenge: create colored worms. The reward: gummy worms

Station 2: Halloween Tales: Solve the Hidden Pictures Puzzles and Fill in the Silly Stories with Stickers from Highlights
My person favorite station. Nothing makes me more nostalgic than Highlights. Solve the hidden picture puzzle, add the stickers, and create a silly Halloween story. The reward: peppermint patties (because I like them)

Station 3: Tarantula from Schleich
My kids HATE spiders and this is one of the coolest ones I’ve ever seen. This will be hiding in a bowl of spaghetti brains and grape eyeballs. Pull the tarantula out without getting brains and eyeballs on my floor and you win. The reward: M&Ms

Station 4: Plus-Plus Halloween Tube
Build me a jack-o-lantern, a bat or your best Halloween creation, either mosaic or 3-D. Most creative wins 2 pieces of candy. The reward: Milky Way

Station 5: Tattoo Stories from Games by Bicycle
Truth be told, I bought this game for my husband and me to play (highly recommend btw) but my kids LOVE tattoos, especially around Halloween, so I set this up to let them draw their own tattoos and tell me a story about why — in a hundred million years, I would give them permission to get one. Winner gets two pieces of candy (not a tattoo). The reward: Tootsie roll pops

Station 6: Shapes ‘N Shadow by Edushape
I thought this was really neat. Using simple shapes, create the ultimate shadow monster. The one that scares me the most wins two pieces of candy. The reward: Hershey Kisses

Complete all 6 take your candy and run or exchange it for movie tickets and give me the candy back. It’s a win win. And my reward: staying dry, keeping my hair straight and a nice bottle of wine.

Happy Halloween!
